Larian Studios’ long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate 3, is finally nearing its official release on Mac and Windows PC on Aug. 3. PlayStation 5 users can expect the game to arrive on Sept. 6. However, Xbox platform users might need to exercise some patience, as the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 might not be available until 2024, according to Michael Douse, the director of publishing at Larian Studios.

The studio, led by creative director Swen Vincke, assures Xbox fans that the delay is not about playing favorites with other platforms, but rather a result of technical limitations that are hindering the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox Series X and Series S.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG that takes place in the iconic world of Dungeons & Dragons. With its isometric gameplay and turn-based combat, players embark on a quest to rid themselves of the Mind Flayer parasite that has infected them. Players have the option to create their own character or select from the game’s pre-existing party members, with director Swen Vincke offering guidance on whom fans should consider playing first.

Douse confirmed on Twitter that the main obstacle for the Xbox Series S version is getting the split-screen feature to work seamlessly, a challenging technical task that is currently in progress but has delayed the Xbox release. Larian Studios is exercising caution in making any official commitments regarding the Xbox Series X and S versions, with the team expressing their desire to ensure a successful launch before announcing anything to the public. Thus, they plan to avoid raising fans’ hopes until they are certain they can deliver on their promises.

For Xbox enthusiasts, it appears they will have to wait until the new year to join the adventure. In the meantime, fans can explore Beamdog’s Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Editions to make the wait more enjoyable. With time to spare, players might even have the opportunity to complete one of those games before Baldur’s Gate 3 becomes available on Xbox.
